Bayern Munich was crowned German champion again, for the eighth consecutive time, after a season with many ups and downs -with the cessation of a coach included- but in which in the final part the Bavarians left no room for doubt and managed to prolong their hegemony.

The season did not start well and what happened in the transfer market gave wings to skeptics.

Borussia Dortmund, on paper Bayern's main competitor, had made an offensive with the arrival of Julian Brandt, Thorgan Hazard and Mats Hummels , who had left the Bavarian club.

Bayern had signed two defenders, Lucas Hernández and Benjamin Pavard - that had precipitated the departure of Hummels - and two promises, Michaël Cuisance and Fiete Arp, and, at the last minute, had Ivan Perisic and Philippe Coutinho on loan .

In the majority's opinion it was too little to compensate for the departure of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery . The cost of signing Hernández , 80 million euros for an injured player, also caused a lot of skepticism.

The development of the first part of the tournament seemed to agree with the skeptics. On the tenth day Bayern had conceded a 5-1 against Eintracht Frankfurt, which had precipitated the dismissal of Niko Kovac .

Flick then took office, first as an interim, and the team had a great reaction when they defeated Dortmund 4-0 the following day.

The second Flick-era victory in the Bundesliga was against Fortuna Düsseldorf away, 0-4.

However, after two consecutive defeats came, against Bayer Leverkusen and the then leader Borussia Mönchengladnach, who came to think that the so-called Flick effect had disappeared.

Bayern then fell to seventh place, the worst classification it had throughout the season, with seven points less than Gladbach.

It was then said that rivals had lost respect for Bayern and that - despite the recovery symptoms with the arrival of Flick - the goalscoring conceded against Eintracht continued to affect the team.

However, despite the defeats, it was later clear that Flick had rejoined the locker room.

He also managed to get Thomas Müller back to be one of the team's engines from midfield and made some decisions that were providential, such as moving Joshua Kimmich to midfield or turning Alphonso Davies into left-back.

Later, Bayern did not lose again, only yielded points in a goalless draw against Leipzig when it was already the leader, and from victory to victory it was cutting ground.

At the end of the first round and the summer break began, RB Leipzig was the leader with a four point advantage over Bayern. Gladbach was second and Dortmund fourth.

In the second round Leipzig and Gladbach had a sharp slump and the title dispute turned into a fight between Bayern and Dortmund.

Bayern took the lead with 14 days to go before the Bundesliga ended and did not release him again.

The stoppage forced by the coronavirus pandemic did not affect the Bavarians either, who, after the return, continued adding their parties by victories.

The doubts that could remain were dispelled when in the home match against Dortmund, which was four points below, Bayern won 0-1, with a great goal from Joshua Kimmich.

Bayern, after that victory, was not yet mathematically champion but the seven points advantage were an income that made it unlikely that the race for the title would open again.

Against Bremen everything was consummated. Now Bayern Flick has the final of the German Cup, which will play on July 4 against Leverkusen, and the remainder of the Champions League in which he has won this season all the games he has played.
