More than 80 firefighters are engaged this Sunday morning on a forest fire in Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey, near Grasse (Alpes-Maritimes).
Visible from the coast, the fire, which broke out on Saturday evening, “has progressed and the area covered exceeds 50 ha”, indicates the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis 06).
"Dawn will allow the water bomber helicopter to be engaged to increase the effectiveness of the device, to have a better view of the topology of the terrain and to increase the effectiveness of the actions", it is also specified.
On Saturday evening, the firefighters reported that the fire was progressing "in a difficult to access sector", on "an upward slope" and "with a moderate wind in the area".
No dwelling is a priori threatened.
In “drought vigilance”
Due to a windy episode announced for this weekend and the observation of drought in the department, the prefecture of the Alpes-Maritimes has decided to establish "a red period" during which "all burning of plants at the 'open air are prohibited'.
Thursday and Friday, forest fires had already destroyed 25 hectares of vegetation in Valdeblore, in the high country, and a dozen hectares in Gorbio, above Menton.
A significant rainfall deficit led the prefecture to put the department on "drought vigilance" a little over two weeks ago.
