6.5-magnitude earthquake strikes Taiwan
A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.5 shook Taiwan on Sunday, causing panic among residents who rushed to the streets after buildings began to sway.
According to the island's meteorological authority, the earthquake occurred at 1:11 pm local time (0511 GMT), at a depth of 66.8 km.
The epicenter of the earthquake was 22.7 kilometers south of Yilan County, east of Taiwan, and was felt across the island, the agency added.
The authority indicated that the first earthquake was followed by a 5.4-magnitude earthquake.
In the Taiwanese capital, Taipei, the quake suspended the city's mass transit service.
Ambulance sirens could be heard in the city.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or serious damage.
