11 killed in an explosion in a mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif .. and "ISIS" claimed responsibility

At least 11 people were killed in an explosion at a Shiite mosque in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif on Thursday, a health official said.

An official in the health sector in northern Afghanistan said that at least 11 other people were killed or wounded in another explosion in the city of Kunduz, also in northern Afghanistan.

The explosions occurred two days after explosions occurred in a secondary school in a predominantly Shiite Hazara area west of Kabul, killing at least six people and wounding 11 others.

"An explosion occurred in the second district inside a Shiite mosque, killing more than 20 people and wounding them," Mohammad Asif Waziri, a spokesman for the Taliban commander in Mazar-i-Sharif, told Reuters.

Zia Zindani, a spokesman for the provincial health authority, said 11 people were killed and 32 wounded in the Mazar-i-Sharif explosion.

Najibullah Sahel of the regional health authority said that hospitals in Kunduz had received 11 people who were dead or wounded after an explosion occurred in the city.

A resident of Mazar-i-Sharif said that she and her sister were buying from a nearby market when she heard a huge explosion and saw smoke coming from the area around the mosque.

"The shop windows were smashed, the market was very crowded and everyone was running," said the woman, who declined to give her name.

Later, ISIS announced on Telegram today its responsibility for the attack on the mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan.
