“On August 2, 2019, at the initiative of the American side, the Treaty between the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the United States on the elimination of their medium-range and shorter-range missiles, signed in Washington on December 8, 1987, was terminated,” the official legal information portal said.
Russian leader Vladimir Putin noted that Russia will not deploy medium-range or shorter-range missiles in any region of the world until the United States begins to do this.
Earlier, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s non-proliferation and arms control department, Vladimir Yermakov, said that Moscow was ready to discuss ways to stabilize the situation with Washington after the end of the INF Treaty based on mutual transparency measures. The deputy head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergei Ryabkov, said that Moscow had proposed to the United States and NATO, by analogy with Russia, to declare a moratorium on the deployment of short-range and medium-range missiles.
