August 21, 2019 Giovanni Buttarelli, magistrate and European Data Protection Supervisor, died at night at the age of 62.

Previously he had served as Secretary General of the Authority for the protection of personal data, from 1997 to 2009, and, upon appointment of the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, he had assumed the office of Assistant Guarantor at the European Guarantor Data Protection Authority (EDPS) from 2009 to 2014. The communication office of the Guarantor reports this.
