The forces of retired Major General Khalifa Haftar bombed for the second consecutive day the Al-Khadra Hospital designated to treat corona’s patients in the Abu Salim area in the Libyan capital, Tripoli. The United Nations “strongly” condemned the attack and considered it a “flagrant violation” of international humanitarian law.
Al-Jazeera correspondent in Libya stated that the bombing of the hospital - which was carried out using Grad rockets - wounded medical personnel who were performing surgery.
Six civilians were injured yesterday when Haftar forces bombed the hospital, and the Ministry of Health in the National Accord Government issued an appeal to local and international humanitarian institutions to move quickly to stop attacks on health institutions.
In a statement, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres "strongly condemned" the intense bombing of the second consecutive day at the Green General Hospital in Tripoli, according to a statement issued in New York.
Guterres also condemned "the continuous attacks on medical personnel, hospitals and medical facilities, especially at this time, when there is an urgent need to prevent the spread of the Corona pandemic," according to the text of the statement.
The Secretary-General cautioned that attacks on health workers, hospitals and medical facilities protected by international humanitarian law could amount to war crimes.
On March 23, Guterres issued a call for an "immediate ceasefire" worldwide to protect those "at risk of devastating losses" due to the emerging Corona virus.
The parties to the conflict in Libya welcomed this invitation, but the hostilities resumed, especially during the last days.
