The freight train that derailed in Gällivare in February this year must have been caused by cracking in the rails. This is according to an investigation by the Swedish Transport Administration about the incident. The report also points out that the cold, minus 31 degrees, and that this type of rail has a higher tendency to crack.

According to the report, the rail that has a life span of 25-30 years has been there for 36 years. Although no person was injured in the accident, the derailed wagons suffered partial damage. Several of the derailed wagons were full of fresh fish, which had to be discarded after the accident.
