31 August 2019Tensions and violence even today in Hong Kong, where protesters took to the streets despite the ban imposed on the eve of the authorities. The police regained control of the area around the parliament after about an hour of guerrilla warfare with protesters who, in addition to throwing bricks, stones and heavy objects at the agents of riot police, threw several Molotov cocktails inside the enclosure surrounding the building.

According to local media reports, many activists have retreated to Wan Chai and Causeway Bay.

Police fired tear gas and security forces had previously used pepper spray on protesters.

Today in central Hong Kong, thousands of people took to the streets, challenging the police ban that two days banned the demonstration called for today by the Civil Front for Human Rights.

Police also intervened with hydrants who fired a blue paint at protesters who were throwing Molotov cocktails at the barricades erected by police outside government offices. While clashes are taking place near the Legislative Council, thousands of other protesters are headed towards the central and financed districts of the city.

Chinese flag with swastika
During today's banned demonstration in Hong Kong, a flag was sighted in the crowd: a red flag like the Chinese one but whose stars formed a swastika. A slogan formed by the words "China" and "Nazi" was associated with the flag: #chinazi. The #chinazi slogan has become popular among opponents to accuse the Beijing regime of violating human rights. Others have criticized the lack of respect for the victims of the Second World War.
