According to SBS coverage, the plan to establish a Joint Strategic Command by 2024, which integrates the military's best offensive weapons, such as the F-35A stealth fighter and Hyunmoo missile, and a state-of-the-art missile defense system, is being pursued.
The purpose is to maximize defense and attack power against North Korea by integrating the asymmetric strategic assets and units of the land, sea, and air forces with the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s nuclear and WMD (Weapon of Mass Destruction) response center as the center.
A high-ranking official at the Ministry of National Defense said, "We are considering a plan to separate strategic assets and units from the land, sea, and air forces and integrate them into a joint strategic command by 2024."
The official explained, "We are also analyzing foreign cases such as the Strategic Command of the U.S. Army. We are envisioning a command that can manage the strategic assets of land, sea, and air in the most agile and efficient way."
The units and weapon systems organized in the Strategic Command include the F-35A stealth fighters of the 17th Fighter Wing of the Air Force, the ballistic and cruise missiles of the Army Missile Strategic Command, the 3,000-ton submarines of the Navy Submarine Command, and the Cheongung-2 of the Air Force Missile Defense Command. The Joint Strategic Command is established under the Joint Chiefs of Staff and is under the command of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
