Landau in der Pfalz (dpa) - A "giant" rabbit in Landau in the Palatinate was apparently thrown by two women with a transport basket into a dromedary enclosure of a zoo - and survived the subsequent impact after a five-meter flight.

The animal - breed "German giant" - got a bleeding wound on the tail on Easter Sunday evening, the police said.

Further examinations would have to clarify whether there is a fracture.

The zoo director had been notified and taken care of the rabbit.

According to initial findings, the perpetrators are two women who, according to witnesses, drove past the zoo in their car and then threw the basket into the enclosure.

A criminal complaint was initiated against the alleged perpetrators for violating the Animal Welfare Act.
