The Pope met this Saturday with Grand
Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Husaini Sistani,
the main Shiite authority in Iraq, in a highly symbolic meeting to ask for fraternal peace between religions that has lasted for almost an hour.
The meeting, which took place privately and without the presence of journalists, was framed in the perspective of the "fraternity" proposed by the Pope in his third encyclical 'Fratelli Tutti'.
From Baghdad, the Pope has traveled early in the morning by plane to Najaf.
Al-Sistani is one of the most influential Shiite clerics, with millions of followers around the world.
In the West, he is primarily known for
his prestige and weight in Iraqi politics,
especially since the 2003 US invasion.
Sistani,
considered a moderate voice,
has played a fundamental role as a political mediator and moral reference in Iraq, which has given him great influence in a country that is at the center of the conflict between the United States and Iran.
In 2014, he urged Iraqis to fight the Islamic State.
After this meeting,
Francisco will travel from Najaf to Nassiriya,
where he will participate in an interreligious meeting in the plain of Ur, where the belief places the birth of Abraham, father of the three monotheistic religions.
