Hanau (dpa) - One year after the racially motivated attack with nine dead in Hanau, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Hesse's Prime Minister Volker Bouffier (CDU) will commemorate the victims today.
Survivors and relatives of the victims will also take part in the event in the Congress Park Hanau, as well as Hanau's Lord Mayor Claus Kaminsky (SPD) and ex-national striker Rudi Völler as honorary citizens of the city.
Due to the corona, the commemoration is limited to around 50 participants.
The 43-year-old German Tobias R. shot nine people with foreign roots in several places in the city in the Rhine-Main area on the evening of February 19, 2020, before allegedly killing his mother and ultimately himself.
He had previously posted pamphlets and videos of conspiracy theories and racist views on the Internet.
The act had caused horror throughout Germany.
Various actions and demonstrations in memory of the victims are planned across Hesse for the anniversary.
Interior Minister Peter Beuth (CDU) has ordered nationwide mourning flags for all public buildings and offices in the state for Friday.
At 7:02 p.m. the bells are to ring symbolically in churches in Hanau and the surrounding area.
The German trade union federation South Hesse region wants to set an example against racism in Hanau with a wreath-laying ceremony and an “anti-fascist city tour” (from 12 noon) as well as the unveiling of a sign.
Further memorial marches are also planned.
