Gelsenkirchen (dpa) - The Schalke supervisory board chairman Jens Buchta was “surprised” about Ralf Rangnick's rejection of a possible return as a sports director.

"The first conversation with his management last Thursday was very constructive and valuable in terms of content," said the chairman of the supervisory board of FC Schalke on Saturday of the German press agency.

"The supervisory board was determined to reach an agreement with Ralf Rangnick in a second round agreed for the coming week."

It is regrettable that it will not come to that.

The supervisory board of the Bundesliga club also has "in view of the events of the last ten days a certain understanding" of the decision of the former Schalke coach.

The committee will strive for the "fastest possible occupation" for the sports director post.

Rangnick had previously announced through his media advisor that he did not want to return to the Bundesliga as a sports director.

The 62-year-old was the most promising candidate for the successor to sports director Jochen Schneider at the bottom of the table.
