Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - NRW Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) has called for a programmatic renewal of the CDU with a view to the election year 2021.

"For one or the other in the Union who was still lounging confidently in the Berlin armchairs of power at the turn of the year, it should slowly dawn: This election year will not be a walk in the park," wrote Wüst in a guest article for the Düsseldorf "Rheinische Post".

"A program has to be found that credibly conveys to the people after the crisis that the CDU will manage to restore the state's full capacity to act," said Wüst.

"We will only be able to be successful as a Union in the coming months if we recognize failures, clearly identify them and address them."

Wüst is considered a possible successor to Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) if he should become Federal Chancellor in the fall.
