Berlin (dpa / bb) - Berlin's Governing Mayor Michael Müller (SPD) strongly condemned the racist attack in Hanau (Hesse) a year ago.
«Such acts concern us all.
We are all equally targeted, ”he said on Thursday.
What is meant is the open, diverse society.
«Racist and right-wing extremist violence, hatred and misanthropy are destroying our society.
We can not permit that."
His deepest sympathy goes to the bereaved of the victims these days.
On February 19, 2020, a 43-year-old German shot nine people with foreign roots in Hanau before allegedly killing his mother and ultimately himself.
A memorial event is also planned for Friday, the anniversary of the attack, in which Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is to take part.
"Right-wing terror threatens all of us living together," declared Anne Helm and Carsten Schatz from the Berlin left-wing parliamentary group in the House of Representatives.
It must therefore finally be understood as a task for society as a whole, to smash right-wing structures, to counter structural racism in authorities and society and to contradict racist and anti-Semitic ideologies - “regardless of the guise in which they appear”.

The district mayor of Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Monika Herrmann (Greens), called for conclusions to be drawn from right-wing terror in Germany.

District Mayor Martin Hikel (SPD) and Anetta Kahane from the Amadeu Antonio Foundation were to speak at the memorial event at the town hall.
In the windows of the town hall, 213 candles are to be placed in memory of all the victims of right-wing extremist or racist violence, and the pictures and names of the murder victims from Hanau can be seen on the balcony.
Further events are planned for Friday.
The Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district office, for example, wants to set the flags in front of the office buildings in Frankfurter Allee and Yorckstraße at half mast as a sign of remembrance.
A demonstration against racism in Neukölln has been announced for Saturday (2 p.m.).
In the past few years, suspected right-wing extremist perpetrators have carried out a whole series of arson attacks and threatened members of left-wing initiatives and parties.
Investigations are underway against two suspicious men and the public prosecutor wants to bring charges.
