05 February 2021 In the first 6 months of 2020, the number of crimes was 45% of the total, compared to 35% in the first six months of 2019, a percentage that reached 50% during the lockdown in March and April 2020. Victims women, about 90% at home in the first half of 2020. From a partner or former 61%.

Less crime more femicides

A picture of the Istat Report on the authors and victims of homicides in the years 2018-2019, which makes us think especially if we read and compare the data of previous years. Murders in Italy are falling.

Those of organized crime fell, 29 in 2019, 9.2% of the total.

Those, on the other hand, in the family, in the home were already skyrocketing in 2019. The victims?

Always women.

Authors?

Always men.

In 2018, there were 345 murders, in 2019 there were 315 of which 204 men and 111 women.

19.7% (of which 17.6% males and 23.4% females) are foreign victims.

In the home or affective, on the other hand, the number of victims increases: 150 in 2019 (47.5% of the total);

93 victims are women (83.8% of the total of female murders).

In judicial proceedings, the accused of murder are increasing in "relational contexts": in 2010 there were 246 defendants, in 2018 they were already 271.

Italy - states Istat - is today one of the safest countries in the world with respect to the risk of being victims of voluntary homicide.

In 2019, the police forces recorded 315 homicides (0.53 victims per 100 thousand inhabitants).

Distinguishing by gender, out of 100 thousand people of the same sex 0.70 are male victims, 0.36 women.

In 2019, the number of femicides was 101, while the share of men among adult murder defendants in 2018 was 93.0%.

Crime decrease "to be monitored"

Comparing the current data on homicides with those of 1991, the peak year from which a downward trend began, the reality has changed a lot: at that time there were more than 6 times more cases (1,917 against current 315), with a rate of 3.4 per 100 thousand inhabitants.

And 37.5% of the murders were attributable to mafia-type organizations.

For Istat "while remaining a phenomenon to be monitored with extreme attention", it constitutes a less significant cause for the number of deaths, equal to 9.7% of the total in the five-year period 2015-2019.

Calabria the primacy of male homicides

In 2019 in Calabria the highest number of murders was committed, with 2.68 cases per 100 thousand males, a value 2.5 times higher than the region that follows it, Campania (1.07) .

In 2019, the national average was 0.70 voluntary homicides per 100 thousand residents: the North and the Center were well below this average, while the opposite occurred in the South.

Specifically, there were fewer homicides of men in relation to the population in the Northeast (0.40 per 100 thousand male residents), followed by the Center and the Northwest (0.51 and 0.59).
