Ulm / Lörrach (dpa / lsw) - In Baden-Württemberg, police rabbis started their work as the first federal state in Germany.
In December, Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU) appointed Rabbi Shneur Trebnik from Ulm for the Württemberg region and State Rabbi Moshe Flomenmann from Lörrach for Baden to the new task.
This goes back to a recommendation of the anti-Semitism commissioner of the state government, Michael Blume.
According to Blume, Baden-Württemberg is only the third state in the world, after the USA and Israel, to have rabbis in the police force.
Since the beginning of the year, the police rabbis have been imparting knowledge about today's Judaism to the police in the southwest, serving as confidants and, like the 19 Christian police chaplains in the country, helping with emergency psychosocial care.
The police rabbis will also be involved in training.
They are currently working on an educational plan on Jewish life in Germany for the police candidates who will start in March.
The Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Interior has signed an agreement on police rabbis with the Israelite religious communities in Baden and Württemberg for an initial period of two years.
