Mannheim (dpa / lsw) - The construction and operation of a megastall in Ostrach in Upper Swabia has been stopped for the time being, according to the Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation Baden-Württemberg (BUND).
The administrative court had followed an urgent application by the environmentalists and found that the building permit for the stable was probably illegal, as stated in a statement from the BUND on Tuesday.
According to its own information, the BUND had initially appealed to the Sigmaringen administrative court against the immediate enforceability of the immission control approval of the district office for the biogas plant of the major project.
However, this was unsuccessful because the judges were also of the opinion that environmental tests were not required for the planned facility with 1000 cows and 80 calves.
According to the BUND, four farmers had planned to build a biogas plant in the immediate vicinity of the cowshed.
The cattle manure and the cattle manure of the stable should be burned in it.
On their website, the farmers announce the construction of a state-of-the-art box playpen for healthier and more comfortable animal husbandry.
A space per animal is provided that goes beyond the minimum requirements of organic animal husbandry.
Family farms from the region are involved in raising cattle.
The BUND is convinced, however, that the keeping conditions in mega stalls, in which animals are crammed together in a confined space, lead to great suffering.
In addition, such industrially run plants accelerated the death of smaller farms and would drive up the lease prices for agricultural land.

In the urgent procedure in Mannheim, the judges made it clear, according to BUND, that the permit to build and operate the megastall was illegal.
The VGH criticized the fact that the responsible district office had not adequately investigated the effects on protected habitats and their biodiversity because no environmental impact assessment had been carried out.
The BUND calls for a rescheduling with a significantly smaller barn and measures to improve groundwater and biodiversity.
The farmers can now remedy the identified deficits or rely on a different decision in a main process.
