Darmstadt (dpa) - With the first victory this year, SV Darmstadt 98 landed a hoped-for liberation in the relegation battle of the 2nd Bundesliga.

Thanks to a double from Marvin Mehlem in the 36th and 48th minute, the Hessians beat SV Sandhausen 2-1 (1-1) on Wednesday and ended their negative series of four consecutive defeats.

Aleksandr Zhirov (1st) gave the guests an early lead.

While the lilies initially climbed to twelfth place with 21 points, Sandhausen remains penultimate with 15 points.

The SVS was already ahead after 33 seconds.

After a free kick, Zhirov headed teammate Nils Röseler to the back, from where the ball found its way into the goal.

In the following period, however, the Palatinate failed to score the second goal despite good opportunities.

Darmstadt improved after half an hour.

First Tobias Kempe (31st) only hit the crossbar, then Mehlem from eleven meters into the left corner to equalize.

Shortly after the change, Mehlem added more.

The home side later recorded a second crossbar hit by Fabian Schnellhardt and with luck survived the stormy final offensive of the guests.
