Oberstdorf (dpa) - Cross-country skier Johannes Klaebo won the gold medal in the last decision of the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf.
The 24-year-old Norwegian won the traditional 50-kilometer race in the classic technique on Sunday and succeeds his compatriot Hans Christer Holund, who won in Seefeld in 2019.
For Klaebo it was already the fourth gold medal in the Allgäu.
His team-mate Emil Iversen (silver) and the Russian Alexander Bolschunow (bronze), who broke his stick on the home stretch, landed on the other podium.
The ambitious Bolshunov, who absolutely wanted to win another title, sat in the finish area after bronze and fought back tears.
After the furious finish, in which he had no chance with a stick, he had thrown his ski goggles into the snow in frustration.
The German cross-country skiers had nothing to do with the outcome of the last of twelve World Cup decisions.
Jonas Dobler showed a decent race and finished 18th, 2:47 minutes behind.
Friedrich Moch landed in 21st place. After 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019, Germany’s cross-country skiers won the fifth World Cup in a row without medals.
Team boss Peter Schlickenrieder had already declared the event in Allgäu as the big goal when he took office in 2018.

Nevertheless, Schlickenrieder was not dissatisfied with the final weekend.
“In any case, it is a conciliatory conclusion, especially with the women’s race.
The boys fought well, Jonas Dobler was just past the top 15, ”said Schlickenrieder on ZDF.
Youngster Moch "delivered a great show".
