Stuttgart (dpa / lsw) - From measuring the tire tread depth using a smartphone app to an algorithm for recognizing pathogens from microscopic images - the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economics supports 44 projects in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) with 11.4 Million Euros.

It offers the economy completely new opportunities and can significantly improve products and services, said Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut (CDU), head of department in Stuttgart.

"With our AI innovation competition, we specifically support small and medium-sized companies from Baden-Württemberg in taking advantage of these enormous opportunities."

The 44 selected projects from Southwest SMEs are intended to overcome technological hurdles in the commercialization of AI and to accelerate the development of AI products and services.

"In order to be at the forefront, we mustn't limit ourselves to successfully using AI solutions from the USA or China."

The country itself must become a leading development location for AI.

The funded projects cover the areas of industry, services, health, mobility, trade, logistics, energy and the construction industry.

A total of 73 small and medium-sized companies are involved.
