Bietigheim-Bissingen (dpa / lsw) - The animal rights organization Peta criticizes the city of Bietigheim-Bissingen (Ludwigsburg district) for the ban on feeding pigeons there.

During the corona lockdown, it is particularly difficult for the birds to find enough food.

"In an exceptional situation like this, it becomes an acute danger to the life of the animals within a very short time", it says in a message.

The organization therefore demands that feedings be permitted.

The city notes that such a ban has been in place for decades.

The animals are also not allowed to be fed in other cities such as Stuttgart or Karlsruhe.

"We have an extensive pigeon population that causes numerous pollution and damage to buildings due to the pigeon droppings," said a spokeswoman from Bietigheim-Bissingen.

Nevertheless, the pigeons would still find a lot of food - and also leftovers or grains from passers-by.

Citizens who violated the feed ban would have to expect a fee-based warning.

The range of fines for this is between five and 500 euros.

As the spokeswoman said, there are currently no plans to change this practice.
