Erfurt (dpa / th) - Shepherds can apply to the state for a subsidy for their animals again this year.

The so-called sheep-goat bonus will continue to be paid out in 2021, the responsible Ministry of the Environment announced on Sunday.

"Grazing is an important part of landscape maintenance and the preservation of biotopes and species," said Environment Minister Anja Siegesmund (Greens).

The bonus is also important because, despite various advances, there is still no comparable offer at federal level.

Although an initiative by Thuringia to this end found a majority in the Federal Council last year, the federal government rejected the introduction of the premium.

Thuringia introduced the support of 25 euros per animal in 2019.

Other federal states have now adopted the model, the ministry said.

"The shepherds and their work are important to us all and need our support so that more and more businesses do not give up sheep and goat farming or reduce their livestock."

According to various associations, professional shepherds are among the poor earners in agriculture.
