On June 7, 1990, Alexy II (Alexey Ridiger in the world) was elected the fifteenth All-Russian Patriarch. The period of his patriarchate is called the revival of the Russian Orthodox Church. Thousands of churches and monasteries were restored, enlightened work was resumed, new seminaries, Orthodox schools and universities were opened. Thanks to the efforts of Alexy II, the Russian Orthodox Church abroad reunited with the Russian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.
