On October 20, 1944, Soviet forces, together with units of the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia (NOAU), expelled the Nazis from Belgrade. Hitler units captured the city in April 1941 during the Yugoslav operation. The Germans established a brutal occupation regime in the country. Only at the Yainsy training ground near Belgrade, the Nazis killed about 80 thousand Serbs and Jews. In general, in Yugoslavia, the Nazis and their accomplices killed about 1.7 million people. Resistance to the invaders was provided by partisan detachments, uniting during the war into the People's Liberation Army of Yugoslavia under the command of Josip Broz Tito. In the fall of 1944, Soviet troops breaking into the Balkans, together with units of the NOAU, began the liberation of Yugoslavia.
