The 20th session of the Plenipotentiary Conference (2018), the supreme body of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), concluded in Dubai yesterday.

The conference was launched with important decisions aimed at setting a road map and shaping the future of the ICT sector in the world. The conference, which attracted 180 countries and 2,300 leading figures in the field of ICT, discussed 274 working papers. Participants expected the fifth generation networks to play a pivotal role in the digital economy.

A statement issued by the conference yesterday referred to important decisions, including the creation of an enabling environment for innovation in the field of communication and information technology, and the promotion of investment in the Internet of things, cities and sustainable smart communities, ICT in developing countries.

ITU predicts that future networks, such as fifth generation networks, will play a pivotal role in the digital economy. These networks will support applications such as smart homes, smart cities, 3D video, business applications, Default, auto-driving.

Member States decided to cooperate among themselves in disseminating methodological frameworks for data and statistics, with a view to protecting children from the dangers of the Internet and enhancing the role of ITU in building a platform for confidence in the use of information technology as a result of the increasing number and severity of cyber threats.
