Fire at JAEA Oarai Research Center No effects such as leakage of radioactive materials September 10 19:07

On the morning of the 10th, there was a fire at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency facility in Oarai Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, which burned the distribution board in the radiation controlled area.

The fire is immediately extinguished, and there is no effect such as radioactive material leaking outside.

Around 11:40 am on the 10th, at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency Oarai Research Center in Oarai-cho, Ibaraki Prefecture, a fire broke out from the distribution board inside the facility that analyzes sodium for cooling.

The fire was immediately extinguished by the workers, and the town fire department rushed to the site to confirm the fire had been extinguished.

According to the Japan Atomic Energy Agency, the distribution board where the fire started is in the radiation control area, but the room with the distribution board does not handle radioactive materials for 10 days, so there is no influence such as leakage of radioactive materials to the outside. In addition, there was no exposure or injury to workers.

When a worker tried to analyze sodium with a facility called a "glove box", the power to the facility did not turn on, so he was inspecting the distribution panel and a fire broke out.

Takashi Sekine, Deputy Director of the Fast Reactor Experiment Department, Oarai Research Institute, JAEA, said, “I am very sorry for this. I would like to investigate the detailed cause.”
