• Opinion: The New York Times scandal: the 'gray lady' is stripped of colors

The times of political correctness that prevail in the United States have led one of the most controversial firms in The New York Times , one of the great bastions of liberalism in that country. Bari Weiss , a journalist with the Opinion section since 2017, announced his resignation in a letter denouncing a climate of harassment by his colleagues and an "intolerant atmosphere" derived from a cultural war between sides within the institution.

Weiss says she was hired to incorporate voices that previously had no place in a left-wing ideology newspaper . He assures that the decision behind the effort was clear: "the failure of the newspaper to anticipate the outcome of the 2016 elections meant that it did not have a firm understanding of the country it covers." However, his defense - indirectly - of the publication of a conservative article during the protests over the death of George Floyd caused harassment towards his figure that has led to his resignation.

The article in question, dated June 3, was signed by Republican Senator Tom Cotton . In it, he criticized the intervention of the US Army in cities where riots and looting had taken place after the murder of Floyd in May by a police officer in Minneapolis . Its publication not only raised blisters among an important part of the staff, but it cost the position to the head of the section, James Bennet .

The day after Cotton's piece came to light, Weiss denounced on Twitter the confrontation between the "old guard" and the new litter of liberals , for whom the safety of the reader who may feel offended by certain points of view about freedom of expression. "I have been teased by many people in recent years for writing about this culture war on campus," he wrote.

In his letter, published on his own website, he denounces that based on the criterion of political correctness that prevails, "the stories are chosen and told in a certain way to satisfy the most limited public, instead of allowing an audience curious read about the world and then draw your own conclusions . "

Weiss also denounces that she was branded as a Nazi and a racist in one of the chat channels that the company uses. "Other New York Times employees publicly defame me as a liar and fanatic on Twitter without fear that their harassment will lead to appropriate action. There never is."
