WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President Donald Trump's personal assistant Madeleine Westerhut resigned on Tuesday after disclosing to reporters information about the president's family, US media reported.

The New York Times quoted unidentified sources as saying that Trump learned that his help had talked about his family and some issues related to the White House during an informal meeting with reporters in New Jersey, where he spent his vacation.

Other media, including CNN and Politico, reported her resignation.

Westerhout, whose office was opposite the Oval Office, has been described by Trump as "the secret of Trump's secrets" and has held the post since the start of his presidency. According to New York, Westerhot "will not be able to enter the White House" anymore.

CNN quoted a former Trump administration official as saying that Westerhut's relationship with the president was "close," and that disclosing information about his family was a "red line" that should not be crossed.

The Westerhut media did not consider a key White House aide, but her resignation adds to a long list of resignations since Trump was elected in 2016.
