In April 2019, after the fire in the Gothic cathedral, Macron advocated modernizing the building in connection with the reconstruction. Several suggestions flowed in on what the new spire could look like, but the increase also met with harsh criticism and protests. Now Emmanuel Macron has changed and the spire will be built in a traditional style and look like it did before the fire. It writes The art newspaper.

Environmentally hazardous material selection

A potential problem with recreating the spire is that it was covered with just over 400 tonnes of lead, a metal that is harmful to both the environment and humans even in low doses. When the 93 meter high spire burned, large amounts of lead particles were released.

However, the reconstruction of Notre-Dame is delayed, not least due to the corona pandemic. New construction start is expected in January 2021.
