Being selected as an official contribution to the Cannes Film Festival usually gives a hefty boost both in terms of cred and finances to filmmakers. Last year, the South Korean Parasite was awarded the festival's finest prize Guldpalmen and in 2017 Swedish Ruben Östlund won the same prize for The square.
Now Cannes announces which films would have been shown at the festival if it had taken place in May. The filmmaker will be able to boast at festivals that are held later in the year and at regular bio premieres.
The heaviest category is the competition category (where the Gold Palm is awarded) followed by Un certain regard which will focus on innovative and bold films.
The films that should have been shown this year are:
The french dispatch - Wes Anderson
Summer of 85 - François Ozone
True Mothers - Naomi Kawasi
Print - Thomas Vinterberg
Heaven - Hong Sang-soo
Peninsula Sang-ho Yeon
