A Spanish national, aged 14, died Monday after a fall during a mountain hike in Arette (Pyrénées-Atlantiques), we learned from the mayor and firefighters.

The Spanish teenager, aged 14, suffered a "fatal fall" in the middle of the afternoon while hiking with her father on the Séguitte plateau, an area of ​​Arette located around 1,000 meters from altitude, explained the department's firefighters.

According to Pierre Casabonne, the mayor of this Béarnaise commune, the victim "slipped on a rocky bar" in a "very accident-prone area" and fell "several tens of meters".

“The hiking trail reaches the plateau without difficulty, but it is then surrounded by rocky bars. The father probably did not appreciate the danger of the site. It’s horrible,” detailed Pierre Casabonne.

Alerted by the panicked father, firefighters and a unit from the high mountain gendarmerie platoon (PGHM) from Oloron-Sainte-Marie found the body late in the afternoon.

According to the mayor, the victim's family, originally from Spain, was on vacation in the town for the Easter weekend and the mother "had stayed in their lodging" during the fatal hike.
