The famous song by The Buggles said that the video killed the radio star but the truth is that, at best, it mortally wounded her.

The final blow is going to be given, it seems, by artificial intelligence, and thanks to none other than

Spotify.

The company today announced a custom radio station with a DJ created using

artificial intelligence.

Not only does he select the music that he thinks we might like at that moment, but he is also capable of commenting on it and giving information about the songs or remembering when we heard it for the first time, just like a presenter on a radio station would do, but addressing each person individually.

To create the voice of this artificial intelligence Spotify has not had to go far.

As a model he has taken that of

Xavier "X" Jernigan,

who was one of the presenters of Spotify's first personalized morning show,

The Get Up.

His voice was digitized from hundreds of samples and now, thanks to advanced machine learning techniques, Spotify's artificial intelligence sounds exactly like him.

The technology is the result of the

acquisition of Sonantic

, a platform for synthetic voices created with artificial intelligence that Spotify acquired in June 2022.

"Her personality and voice have worked very well with our listeners. It is the first model for DJ voices but we will continue to iterate and innovate, as we do with all our products," they explain from the company, confirming that in the near future users will be able to

choose alternative voices.

Spotify has selected the OpenAI GPT-3 language model as the generator of the comments that accompany the music, but will also have a team of editors that will check and modify them to avoid

possible errors.

The DJ function, which is currently in the testing phase and only works in English, selects songs based on the user's tastes but also looks for new songs that it thinks might interest them, as other recommendation functions in the application already do,

such

as the Discover Weekly list.

If the selection doesn't suit the mood at the moment, it is possible to change it by pressing just one button.
