Josema Yuste

(Madrid, 1954) returns to the Teatro Amaya, one of his favorite venues, and does so again with one of his favorite works,

Dinner for Idiots,

although this time in a different way.

After having played the character of Carlos for years, one of the protagonists of this hilarious comedy, the actor and comedian now assumes the role of director, with his own adaptation, of this well-known work by Francis Veber, starring Junara Bonet, David Fernández and Agustín Jiménez, among others.

The artist, who combines this work with his performance in the play

El Pooper

, assures that he faces this challenge with great enthusiasm.

"I felt the need to direct it because I love this particular comedy. After doing it for four-odd years, I came to know it inside out really well and wanted to be outside the window and enjoy it in a different way."

He only set one condition to do so: that it be starred by

Agustín Jiménez

, who was already his partner in the role of Francisco Piñón.

"For me it was paramount, because he is a magnificent

jerk

, and it was what I most wanted from this story.

I thought he was going to turn it down, because he had already done that role and, besides, he had a lot of work to do.

But he said yes immediately, to my surprise."

Have you changed many things and have you added a personal touch to this new adaptation?

Yes of course.

In the old version there were gags and jokes that, being stuck to the news, now no longer make much sense.

They sounded a bit old and I have changed it for things more from now.

It is not very complicated work, and at the same time fun, because the plot of the comedy is there and cannot be changed. Is there a lot of improvisation? I like to improvise, but not constantly.

For me it is important that the show does not come out hermetically the same every day, and that there is the ability to put in something that occurs to you, as long as it does not complicate the person next to you.

But not everyone can improvise, and before the play started, I gave them an important talk about it, in the sense that you can't overdo it.

I like,

but you have to have a lot of control to let go.

They can do it but on time and without going too far, because the show always has to last an hour and forty.

Has the way of doing comedy changed a lot since you started.

Do you think that many of the gags that Tuesday and Thirteen did today could not have been staged?

Sure, obviously.

Today you have to be careful with many things.

But, having said that, you can't put a gag in your mouth either in case Pepe or Juan gets upset, because there will always be someone who gets offended.

Then what do you do?

What do I tell so that a person or a group does not get upset?

It is impossible.

What you have to do is know what puddle not to get into and have a little finesse and intelligence so as not to hurt too much.

That way you can do humor with many things, with intelligence, with good taste.

Josema Yuste (left) with the rest of the cast of 'Dinner for Idiots'.

Your career has always been linked to comedy, would you dare to do something dramatic? It would be weird for the audience and for me too.

I feel comfortable doing comedy for many reasons, and one of the main ones is that I giggle quite easily.

So, if I'm doing a comedy and I laugh, which happens a lot, nothing happens, people laugh, you catch it and it's over.

If, on the contrary, I am acting in, for example,

Othello

and I laugh, I have automatically loaded the function and, surely, they would throw me out.

So, that's why I don't do drama, because I'm an actor who likes to laugh, I can't help it and, although I'm controlling more and more, logically, I think that if I were in a dramatic scene, I would laugh even more. Why? Why do you think so few young people go to the theater?

The theater audience, in general, is older, the average is 55 and up, fortunately.

Young people from 18 to 35 usually go to the monologue, because it's something easy to laugh at.

That is why I think that the monologue is a good attraction for the theater of a young audience.

Those who are now 25, there will come a time when they get bored of seeing so much stand-up, I say, and they will go to the theater when they turn 40. I say this from experience, children of friends,

nephews and others realize that they can also laugh at a funny comedy with some characters and a beautiful set design. Has the cultural bonus of 400 euros from the Government for young people to go to the theater helped?

Man, it doesn't subtract... I don't think it has helped much for very young people to go, but some will have been bitten.

A scene from 'La diner de los idiotas', with Agustín Jiménez in the center wearing a tie.

Idiots' Dinner

is about a gathering of friends to which every week they invite a different person to make fun of them.

Have you come across many idiots in real life? Yes, of course.

I've come across some idiot, like everyone else.

And there are those who will think of me that I am an idiot.

We've all come across them at some point, but we don't have to give it more importance, you hold on for a while and that's it. Director, producer, film actor, theater actor, presenter... What is your favorite facet? If you give me choose only one, I would tell you that actor in the theater.

It is the one I like the most, without a doubt, because in the theater there is a great advantage for the actor: you start the performance and absolutely no one is going to cut you during the duration of the play.

What annoys me the most in this world is being cut when I'm playing a scene, it kills me.

I understand that on television and in the cinema it is like that, and I assume it, but I don't like it.

And another thing that I love is the public, to whom I am always very grateful.

For me, the best prize I can have is those people who come to see me at the theater.

The best.

No statuette or award, not even an Oscar (laughs), surpasses the happiness that my audience gives me.

It is what I love the most, admire, care for and protect. Now that series are in fashion, would you dare with any? Well, I have three offers on the table to do television, all three different, and I am going to do one that can be combined with the theater, because I haven't done anything on TV for a long time and it's good to be there from time to time.

Although I consider myself an actor who is well known for Tuesday and Thirteen and I already have an audience that I have earned, I think that from time to time you have to appear on television. Speaking of which, every New Year's Eve remembers your stage on Tuesday and Thirteen.

Do you feel nostalgic?

Do you see yourself? I don't see myself,

but then you hear people still tell you that they laugh at those gags and the satisfaction is enormous.

Because in the end, you realize over the years that you have left a mark on the history of humor in Spain and I am deeply proud of that, without a doubt. You are also an excellent parodier and imitator.

Does political news deserve any parody? Well, some errors are portrayed by themselves.

No need to parody them.

For example, not recognizing certain errors, as in the case of the Law of Only yes is yes, and not being able to be humble to rectify it, is a parody in itself.

In fact, if you look closely, hardly any comedian today makes a parody of the government or politics, because they are already so absurd that they are not worth it. Does a comedian like you retire? Well, I don't know, the TRUE.

It is very difficult for an artist to retire, as a bank employee retires.

We, at least me, are actors by vocation and when that happens, which is something inexplicable, you carry your vocation on your back and, although it sounds a bit pedantic, it is very comparable to the life of a priest or a nun, something mystical that is not can be explained.

Breaking that is very difficult.

A nun is a nun until she dies and I... I don't know, it's complicated.

The Madrid of...

Josema Yuste was born and lived until she was 17 years old in

Chamberí

, on García de Paredes street.

"It was and is the best neighborhood in Madrid, I have no doubt. It has everything, shops of all kinds, markets, it is central without being in the very center and, another thing that people don't know is that, once it gets dark It's a very quiet neighborhood. I love it. I would have continued living there and when I go, I feel happy."

Currently, the actor resides in Mirasierra.

"I've been here since the early 80s and, furthermore, I'm a neighbor of José Mota," he says proudly with a laugh.

Favorite corners of Madrid:

"I feel totally Madrid and I am very comfortable here. I go to everything, I like everything. I know the city quite well... I love the center for a Sunday morning and having a beer in such a bar I like the area of Colón, Chamberí, the Bernabéu... everything.

A fetish theater

: I love the

Amaya Theater

(General Martínez Campos, 9), because it is in Chamberí, because before it was a cinema that I used to go to a lot with my father as a child, because we had it close to home, and because the brothers Blasco carry it with an extraordinary love and affection.

For me, it is wonderful to work in that theater.

They also take great care of the viewer, it's very nice.

It is one of my favorites, without a doubt.

A restaurant:

the

Txistu inn

(Pl. Angel Carbajo, 6).

They make the best tripe there.

For me they are extraordinary.

And then it has something very good, which is honest, market cuisine, very well prepared that respects the product very much and is very healthy.

I really like that type of cooking, in which the product is not handled much and it is very natural.

So I feel very comfortable there and, when I meet friends that I haven't seen for a long time or with family or for work, I take them there because we are very well and the attention of the waiters is very good.

It's a classic site but I love it.

I respect the work of chefs a lot, but I have my tastes and I feel more comfortable in a place eating something that I see what it is than in another with an extraordinarily elaborate, remastered and deconstructed kitchen... although I highly respect innovation.

A shop

: «I don't like to go shopping.

I am a person who is not very consumerist, very austere and simple in those things.

My only

hobby

in my spare time is golf, which I play at the La Moraleja club, and sometimes I go to buy balls, gloves and shoes, but because I need it».

Meson Txistu.

A monument: La Cibeles

.

I love it, and not because it is associated with Real Madrid (he is a Madridista, according to him, by inheritance), but because it is very original, beautiful, it is in a strategic location in Madrid, at the confluence of two important streets, and because it is a woman;

that is also very nice.

A series:

the last one I got hooked on was

The Squid Game.

But I do not have time.

For me there is a fundamental premise, which is to sleep well.

That allows me to be perfect, active during the day.

I come home from work, have a light dinner and watch the end of

El Hormiguero

, which entertains me a lot.

And, often, I go to bed, because I get up early, I'm not an actor who gets up at 12. I do it at 8 o'clock.

every day because I have many things to do.

I must sleep at least eight hours, yes or yes, and I prefer to sleep before watching series.
