Last week, Riot Games fell victim to a hack.

Several titles from its catalog of video games are affected, including

League of Legends

, reports BFMTV.

Riot Games announced on Twitter on Wednesday that the source code of its famous game was in the hands of a malicious person who demanded a ransom for not disclosing it.

A tactic reminiscent of that implemented against Rockstar Games, victim of a major cyberattack last September.

This hack had resulted in the disclosure of at least 90 videos of the future GTA VI.

To carry out their attack on Riot Games, the hackers used social engineering.

Thus, they came into contact with an employee of the company and allegedly manipulated him psychologically.

They were then able to access the information they were looking for.

As promised, we wanted to update you on the status of last week's cyber attack.

Over the weekend, our analysis confirmed source code for League, TFT, and a legacy anticheat platform were exfiltrated by the attackers.

Anti-cheat platform in the hands of cybercriminals

Riot Games says another game from the studio has been affected:

Teamfight Tactics

.

Regarding the ransom, the American company is categorical.

"Needless to say that we will not pay," said the publisher on Twitter.

In addition, cybercriminals also had access to an anti-cheat platform.

This guarantees that online game data is neither manipulated nor distorted by players seeking to gain an advantage over other participants.

"Since the attack, we have been working to assess its impact on anti-cheat and be ready to deploy fixes as quickly as possible if necessary," said Riot Games.

Prototyping content

This attack is not comparable to the one that targeted Rockstar Games.

Because the stolen data does not concern a future game, but games already marketed - since 2009 for

League of Legends

.

However, the source code contains certain features that could appear in future versions, points out BFMTV.

“While we hope some of these game modes and other changes eventually make it to players, most of this content is in prototype and there is no guarantee that it will ever be released,” the studio comments.

The American company has launched an audit.

She promised to publish the findings.

In the meantime, she assures that no personal data has been stolen.
