Fungi, tear and

Gustavo Santaolalla

.

This trinity marks the player of

The Last of Us

-deservedly considered one of the best video games in history- and will do so in the same way with the viewer of the series that HBO Max premieres on January 16.

No viruses, no nuclear power, no zombies.

The Cordyceps fungus is the cause of 60% of humanity dying or being infected in just a few months in the video game created by

Bruce Straley

and

Neil Druckmann

, who in the fiction of HBO and Sony Pictures Television -the game is exclusive to Playstatition- joins forces with

Craig Mazin

, responsible for the critically acclaimed miniseries

Chernobyl

, winner of 10 Emmy Awards.

Curiously, Druckmann initially ignored Mazin's proposal to transfer Joel and Ellie's experiences to television because he "had no idea who he was" (he also doesn't seem to have told him about his past in

Scary Movie 3

or

The Hangover 2: Now in Thailand!

).

But after agreeing to a meeting, the creative energy flowed, something that is palpable from the first sequence of the series, an addition that is reminiscent of Chernobyl but that fits perfectly with the universe of the game from the producer Naughty Dog.

The tear comes from every pore of Joel's skin.

From the moment the game controller is picked up for the first time, the player fears the worst.

And it does good.

That feeling carries over to the start of the series.

The character of

Pedro Pascal

-physically, he looks just enough, but you believe the Chilean in any role- is a being who has lost everything.

He doesn't live, he wanders the world with no hope that anything will change.

And his first meeting with Ellie doesn't change his mind either.

He will be in charge of escorting her through what is left of the United States while he becomes aware that she may be the key to ending the pandemic.

Bella Ramsey

had it more complicated.

His physical resemblance to the video game character is slight, but she knows how to give him character, with that particular mix of rudeness and innocence.

The series lasts practically the same as the video game and the search and action parts are replaced by

flashbacks

that add nuance and context to the original work.

It is palpable that it is a brainy and millimeter adaptation.

As Mazin told the BBC, "Changes are designed to complete and expand, not to undo, but to improve."

And what to say about

Gustavo Santaolalla

.

The immersion that is made in the universe of

The Last of Us

would have been impossible without the work of this Argentine musician and composer, author of the soundtrack of films like

Brokeback Mountain

or The

Motorcycle Diaries

.

Santaolalla spent two and a half years composing the soundtrack for the first game and three and a half years making the soundtrack for the sequel.

He says he composes from the heart, and towards that point he directs the Ronroco and the six-string bass, giving depth to a post-apocalyptic world where at every step a morally questionable decision has to be made, if there is such a thing as when everything is grey.

"If the world is lost, why go on?" Ellie wonders.

One of the multiple answers given to it in fiction seeks to become, through a promotional campaign, a motto similar to the mythical "

Winter is coming"

: "

When you are lost in the dark, look for the light

".

Now it will be the general public that decides if that will be the case.
