On January 12, 1903, Igor Kurchatov, an outstanding Soviet physicist and founder of the nuclear industry in the USSR, three times Hero of Socialist Labor, was born. He headed the first work in the Soviet Union to study the fission of the uranium atom nucleus, and then - on the domestic atomic project. Under his leadership, the first plutonium bombs, hydrogen weapons and nuclear reactors were created in the USSR. Kurchatov became the founder of the Soviet school of nuclear physicists.
