A man in his 50s who set fire to a fishing boat moored in Seongsan Port, Jeju, causing property damage of over 2.6 billion won, was given an increased sentence in an appeals trial.

Today (11th), the Jeju Criminal Division 1 of the Gwangju High Court (Presiding Judge Lee Gyeong-hoon) overturned the lower court sentenced to 4 years in prison in the appeal trial of Mr. A (57), who was arrested and indicted for charges such as arson of a ship in Hyeonju, and sentenced him to 6 years in prison. sentenced.

The Court of Appeal accepted the prosecution's appeal that the sentence of the lower court was too light and unjust.

Mr. A is accused of setting fire to the 29-ton fishing boat B, which was anchored in Seongsan Port, Seogwipo City, at around 3:18 am on July 4 last year.

At the time, the fire that surrounded Lake B spread to Lake C (39t) and Lake D (47t) on either side and was extinguished after about 12 hours.

Fortunately, there were no casualties, but property damage worth about 2.65 billion won occurred.

As a result of the investigation, it was found that Mr. A had a debt while working with ship owner C in the past, and he was urged to pay the debt before the arson.

In particular, Mr. A drove his vehicle without a license and drunk before and after the crime.

The appellate court pointed out that "the defendant's crime caused serious economic damage to unrelated ship owners, but no reimbursement has been made so far."

At the same time, he broke the trial court and sentenced him to six years in prison with a heavier sentence, saying, "In consideration of various sentencing conditions, we accept the prosecution's appeal that the sentence of the lower court is too light."
