The Ministry of Public Administration and Security announced today (3rd) that it has decided to recognize a high school student injured in the Itaewon disaster who died last month due to an extreme choice.

As a result, the death toll from the Itaewon disaster, officially counted by the government, increased by one from 158 to 159.

The Ministry of Public Administration and Security explained that as a result of listening to the opinions of related legal and medical experts, a direct causal relationship was established and recognized as a deceased person.

In accordance with the Basic Act on Disaster and Safety Management, the deceased will receive relief funds and funeral funds the same as those of the existing deceased.

The high school student who survived the Itaewon disaster received psychological treatment after the accident, but passed away on the 12th of last month after failing to overcome the trauma of leaving two of his friends at the scene.

In the process of reporting to the special committee for the Itaewon disaster, the opposition party argued that survivors of the disaster should be recognized as victims even if they died late from trauma.

On the 29th of last month, in a report by the Special Committee on Government Investigation into the Itaewon Disaster, the student's mother said through Basic Income Party member Yong Hye-in, "I have never been contacted by any government agency after my child died, such as one-stop integrated support for bereaved families." No," he said.
