Near Pau in Béarn, a 65-year-old man was arrested at his home on Tuesday, according to France 3 Nouvelle-Aquitaine and France Bleu Béarn.

The two media report that the sexagenarian had in his possession more than 80,000 child pornography images.

An offense punishable by five years in prison and a fine of 75,000 euros.

Images of extreme violence featuring minors in situations involving child pornography.

This is what the computer files of a 65-year-old man in Béarn contained, according to information from France 3 Aquitaine and France Bleu Béarn.

According to the two local media, computer watchdogs identified suspicious downloads and alerted the police.

The man in question, who would thus hold more than 80,000 child pornography images, was therefore arrested at his home before being placed in police custody and then released. 

The man evokes "curiosity"

With France Bleu and France 3, the public prosecutor of Pau Rodolphe Jarry indicates that certain images are of a particularly worrying nature.

“The images are classified between 1 and 9. The 9 indicates a maximum severity determined according to several factors, in particular that of the age of the victims. There, we found images of a very high level”, he reports. .

26,000 of them would even be category 9 according to the Pau prosecution, quoted by the two media.

The contents of the computer equipment seized from the home of the sexagenarian must now be analyzed by the investigators.

Unknown to justice, the man justified himself by evoking his "curiosity" and rejecting any "attraction" or "willingness to transgress the prohibitions", according to the words of the prosecution, reported by France Bleu.

Explanations that will now have to convince justice.

At time T, the sexagenarian faces up to five years in prison, together with a fine of 75,000 euros.

He will also have to submit to a psychiatric examination.
