It is pointed out that safety standards are not properly prepared because the height of the chest of drawers, which cannot withstand the load and easily collapses, is low.

On the 28th of last month, Mr. A, who lives in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, presented her mother with a chest of drawers sold by a famous furniture company.

The chest of drawers made of MDF material, which is lighter and less durable than solid wood, is approximately 52cm high and weighs approximately 15kg.

On the afternoon of the same day, Mr. A heard his mother's scream and the sound of a chest of drawers collapsing.

She hurriedly ran to find her startled mother dodging the falling chest of drawers.

Mr. A said, "When I opened the door after filling the clothes, the chest of drawers collapsed, and even if the drawer was empty, the chest of drawers fell over with just one finger." said.

He continued, "If an infant, not an adult, touches a chest of drawers and the chest of drawers falls over, it may be dangerous because the child may be injured."

The problem is that products like this have no safety standards.

Korea revised its furniture safety standards in 2017 after a series of accidents in the United States in which an IKEA chest of drawers fell and resulted in the death of an infant.

If you look at the safety standard revision announced by the National Agency for Technology and Standards in 2020, household drawers with a height of 76.2 cm or more should not fall over even with a load of 25 kg, considering the possibility of children hanging on them.

Safety requirements are also specified for mounting fixtures to be attached to the wall or to provide fixtures.

However, there are no safety standards for products under 76.2 cm.

An official from the National Agency for Technology and Standards said, "For furniture that is less than 762 mm, handling precautions are written, 'Be careful not to fall or fall from furniture,' but there is no standard for preventing tipping (falling)."

Therefore, Mr. A did not even receive a refund properly.

This is because the customer's remorse will result in returning the normal product.

The furniture maker's position is that there is no problem with the product.

An official from a furniture company said, "Only products with a certain height or higher are marked with information about falling. explained.

"If you look at the picture of the report, you put a lot of things in the drawer and opened two compartments at once," he said.

Mr. A said, "I don't think it means that consumers handle dangerous furniture carefully, it doesn't mean that the product is safe."
