• There are 2 ways to delete your Instagram account: temporary or permanent.

  • Before permanently deleting your Instagram account, remember to upload your personal data.

As usual on this type of platform, it is very easy to open an account, but not so easy to delete it.

Movements like #DeleteFacebook have popped up in recent years, and Instagram is no exception.

By the way, maybe you are here because you tried to delete your Instagram account from your phone and you failed?

And don't worry, it's normal.

There's even a reason for this: Instagram doesn't offer profile deletion access from Android mobile apps.

However, recently, you can delete your Instagram account from your iPhone.

Generally speaking, there are two ways to delete your Instagram account:

  • Temporary deletion

: you temporarily disappear from the network, but keep your user name and everything you have uploaded, including your interactions with other content, and your messages.

Everything will return to its original state when you decide to restore your profile (if you choose).

  • Permanent deletion

: Everything associated with your Instagram account (posts, messages, comments, stories) will be lost forever, including your username.

In the rest of this article, we detail the step-by-step to manage to delete your account, in both cases.

Temporarily deactivate your Instagram account on PC

To pause your Instagram account from an Android smartphone, here is the process:

  • Open your browser and go to Instagram.com

  • Log in with your username and password

  • Click on your profile picture in the upper right corner of the screen

  • Select “Settings”

  • Click on “Temporarily deactivate my account” in the lower right corner

  • Select the reason why you want to temporarily deactivate your account

  • Enter your password, then click on the “Temporarily deactivate account” button

  • Select “Yes”

Your account is now deactivated.

Your likes, comments and profile will therefore be hidden until you reactivate it.

To reactivate your account, simply log in to Instagram, via the application or the web browser version.

Permanently delete your Instagram account on PC

If you opt for permanent deletion, remember that everything on your Instagram account will be gone forever, including your username.

Before this step, you can make a backup copy of your content.

Here is the procedure to follow:

  • Open your browser and click on the following link: https://www.instagram.com/accounts/remove/request/permanent/

  • Log in with your credentials

  • Select the reason why you want to deactivate the account, enter your password and click on the red “Permanently delete my account” button.

  • Click Ok.

It's good, you have deleted your account.

Remember that in this case there is no way to get it back.

So, if in doubt, it is better to disable it temporarily.

Delete your account from the Iphone application

The Instagram mobile app does not offer user deletion on Android, but it does on iPhone.

Indeed, Apple requires developers to introduce account deletion in their applications.

Whether to delete your account temporarily or permanently, if you have an iPhone, you can do the following:

Open your Instagram app on your iPhone (or iPad).

  • Go to your profile (bottom right, bottom menu) and click on the top three menu bars.

  • Select "Settings".

  • Go to "Account".

  • Click "Delete Account" and choose whether you want temporary deletion ("Deactivate Account") or whether you want to completely delete your Instagram account ("Delete Account").

Unlike Twitter, Instagram doesn't permanently delete your account if you don't reactivate it within a certain period of time.

So you don't have to worry that it will disappear if you forget it for a while.

However, again unlike Twitter, Instagram does not allow you to reactivate your account immediately after deactivating it.

According to Instagram, it takes a few hours to deactivate an account, and once it's done, you'll have to wait a few hours again to reactivate it.

Delete your account from the Android app

For Android smartphones, Instagram does not allow account deletion directly from the app.

To circumvent this, there is still a solution:

  • Open a web browser (Chrome, Mozilla, Edge or other)

  • Go to “www.instagram.com”

  • Log in with your credentials

  • Click on the button “Deactivate my account” or “Permanently delete my account” according to your choice

  • Click on Ok and choose the reason for your unsubscription from the options offered by Instagram

Before deleting my Instagram account, how do I download my data?

If you decide to leave Instagram permanently, know that it is possible to recover all your media data (photos and videos) in a simple and fast way.

To download a backup of your Instagram profile data, you can go to your smartphone or PC.

Unlike deleting the account, this operation can be done from the Android application.

Then follow these steps:

  • Login to your Instagram profile

  • Tap the menu in the top right corner and select “Your activity”

  • Scroll through the menus to the last line “Download your data”

  • Click the link to start downloading the ZIP file containing your photos and other profile information.
