To promote access to drinking water around the world, Jean-Paul Augereau developed the Safe Water Cube in 2015, a fountain that filters most of the water on the planet, with the exception of sea water. At the microphone of Europe 1, he details the operation of his invention.

It is a rather special, even magical fountain, created by a Frenchman.

In 2015, Jean-Paul Augereau invented the Safe Water Cube, a fountain that filters any water in the world to make it drinkable, and "intended for populations who do not have access to drinking water", explains he at the microphone of Europe 1. Recalling that at the end of 2022, two billion people do not yet have access to it, the inventor underlines that to help them, "we had to have an object that could be used by all and not break down".

Jean-Paul Augereau details how his invention works: "First we have a manual pump. Then there are five fully mechanical filtration stages, and we end with ceramic filtration at 0.02 microns which allows prevent bacteria and viruses from passing through and therefore guarantee the quality of the water that comes out of the tap".

No power source needed

This fountain therefore works manually, and does not need energy.

This means that it can be used anywhere in the world, even in the middle of the desert.

"That's really the point," notes the inventor at the microphone of Ombline Roche on Europe 1. You just need to have filters.

"When they are clogged with unsanitary water", he continues, "there is no more water flowing from the tap. You have to clean them with a brush and white vinegar, and that is distributed !"

Jean-Paul Augereau adds that the Safe Water Cube "has no consumables, knowing that we filter 1,000 liters of water per hour. This fountain can supply a village of 800 to 1,000 people per day" .

In addition, this water can come from any source, a river, a well, ponds, rain... "Whatever the water, even brackish, up to 15 to 20 grams of salt, but except sea water which is still too salty", nevertheless tempers the Frenchman, who founded an association to promote access to drinking water.

An invention certified by WHO

This invention has been certified by a bailiff, according to the criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO).

At the end of 2022, "we have 340 fountains installed in 20 countries around the world, and that allows around 250,000 people to have access to drinking water", continues Jean-Paul Augereau.

These are mainly installed in schools because the founder works "with teachers on the issue of hygiene, the importance of washing hands, drinking drinking water... Also, these are places in complete safety. Finally, the children bring home a 20-litre container of drinking water every evening for their family", lists the inventor.

As for the prices, Jean-Paul Augereau indicates on Europe 1 that the fountain transported to the customs of the country, the displacement of the members of the association and the training of the populations cost 6,600 euros.

"The sinews of war is money", admits the founder who needs donations to be able to continue to bring drinking water to populations who are deprived of it.
