Recently, there have been a series of fires in cars running in the cold around minus 10 degrees Celsius.

Reporter Kim Ji-wook covered why this kind of accident happens and there is no way to prevent it.

On the evening of the day before yesterday (17th), on the western arterial road in Seoul.

Firefighters spray water on a burning car.

At the same time, on the 2nd Gyeongin Expressway and on the internal ring road on the 3rd, vehicle fires are continuing in the cold weather of around -10 degrees Celsius.

Experts point out rapid temperature changes as the biggest cause.

When you start driving, the temperature in the engine room of a vehicle quickly soars to over 100 degrees.

Real car fuel parts.

When the temperature drops in winter, the parts contract, and at this time, the connection between parts loosens, causing fuel to leak and cause a fire.

[Park Byeong-il/Car master: These days (parts) are made of plastic.

Then, since it is a touch method, it contracts and expands as the temperature changes, and fuel or oil leaks from there.

Because it can lead to a fire right away.

(Is this really oil?) Yes.

This is leaking oil.]

The exhaust gas reduction device, which has been running a lot in new cars lately, is also pointed out as a cause.

As the pollutants emitted from the engine are burned at high temperatures, the engine room temperature is inevitably higher than that of unequipped vehicles.

In fact, when we tested a vehicle equipped with a smoke reduction device, the engine room temperature, which was about 30 degrees before driving, soared to 130 degrees in 20 minutes of driving.

Therefore, it is essential to check for leaks in strong weather like these days.

[Lee Ho-geun/Professor of Future Automotive Department, Daeduk University: If sealing materials are used in the connection area, there is a high probability of oil leakage in the case of an old car with a large temperature difference.

It is best to replace the parts in these connections.]

Also, you should open the engine room from time to time to see if there are any foreign substances such as fallen leaves.
