The strike by the cargo union has ended, but the gap between the government and the labor community has widened over the safe freight rate system.

In the meantime, the deadline for sunsetting the safe fare system is now only about two weeks away.

The safe fare system, also called the 'minimum wage on the road', is still applied only to some items.

More than 90% of cargo drivers do not, but if this continues, all cargo drivers will soon be in the same situation.

Reporter Lee Kang covered what the day of cargo drivers without a safe fare system is like.

<Reporter> Yoo Byung-

kwan, a truck driver, starts his day at 2 am.

He's a big truck, so there's a lot to check before setting off.

It is 2:50 in the morning. From now on, let's follow the daily schedule of a truck driver who is not subject to the safe fare system.

[Yoo Byung-gwan/Truck driver: (Where are you going?) It's a construction site in Gwangyang, Jeollanam-do.]

It takes 5 hours to drive along the Namhae Expressway via the Jungang Expressway and the Central Inland Expressway.

A cargo truck arrives at a construction site in Gwangyang.

As soon as the materials are unloaded, they move to a nearby port to load other loads.

[Yoo Byung-gwan/Lork driver: It's imported quicklime, but I'll load it in a container and take it to the factory, to the factory in Danyang.]

You have to do the loading of the goods yourself.

[Yoo Byung-gwan/Truck driver: It's something we shouldn't do, but as you can see, there's no one there.

If you don't do this, you won't be able to load it, so you have to do it.

(Have you ever been hurt?) I have fallen once.

It's the year before last.

I had a cast because my ankle was cracked.]

This time, I am going to Danyang, Chungcheongbuk-do, carrying more than 20 tons of cargo.

[Yoo Byung-gwan/Truck Driver: There are times when I forget (fall asleep).

Then it's a real spine chill.

I almost went to hell...

.]

Chasing sleep is a matter directly related to life.

[Yoo Byung-gwan/Truck driver: I use candy and gum, and when I have time to stop at a rest area, I drink a cup of coffee. I don't eat well while driving, I get sleepy when I'm full.] Not

subject to the safe fare system, but a job If you reduce it, it is difficult to achieve an appropriate profit.

[Yoo Byung-gwan/Truck driver: The additional cost is several times that of a car.

Even for just one tire, they usually cost between 300,000 and 400,000 won and between 400,000 and 500,000 won.

But my car has 22 tires.]

This is Mr. Yoo's income statement.

It seems like a lot at 14 million won in income, but after deducting 6.6 million won in oil prices, 1.4 million won in tolls, replacement costs such as urea water, and commissions, the monthly profit is about 4 million won.

Mr. Yoo arrived near his home in Jecheon today with his last luggage from Jecheon, Chungcheongbuk-do, Gwangyang, Jeonnam, and Chungju via Danyang, Chungbuk.

The drive exceeded 16 hours and the total distance covered was 850 km.

I work 6 days a week, 90 hours a week.

[Kim Seong-hee/Professor, Korea University Institute of Labor Studies: City buses are now a little normalized, but with the semi-public operating system, it is now possible.

If you look at the case of city buses, the need to operate through such a public system coordination organization is very high.]
