An incumbent police officer has been caught stealing a wallet by opening someone else's closet in a golf course changing room.

Jeollanam-do Naju Police Station booked Sergeant A without detention on charges of theft.

Sergeant A is suspected of stealing a wallet containing millions of won in cash and ID cards from a dressing room closet at a golf course in Naju around 12:30 noon on the 13th.

Sergeant A contacted the golf course saying he had picked up the wallet, but there was a time difference between the wallet owner's report and the loss.

He later said in a police investigation, "I memorized the numbers while watching the password of the closet."

Sergeant A, who only entered the dressing room without playing golf on the day of the incident, claimed during the investigation that "I went to meet the debtor. I took out my wallet from the closet to verify my identity."

The police have released Sergeant A from his position and are conducting a separate investigation.

He is also scheduled to initiate disciplinary proceedings.

At the time of the crime, Sergeant A was working at the Gwangju Seobu Police Station's district division.

The police officer in question was handed over to the prosecution and given a summary order of a fine of 2 million won, and was also dismissed for severe punishment.
