The mayor of Vigo,

Abel Caballero

, has turned on this Saturday the Christmas lights of the city and "of the whole planet" in a massive act full of music and artificial snow carried out in the Porta do Sol of the olívica city.

Thousands of people have gathered this afternoon in Vigo to be able to see first-hand the lighting of the most anticipated Christmas lights, in an event that began minutes before 7:00 p.m., despite the fact that around 1:00 p.m.: 00 hours began to arrive the first assistants to the square.

The councilor, accompanied by the 19 socialist councilors of the Vigo City Council, climbed the steps of the giant tree of lights at the moment the rain stopped, after hours of rain in the city.

There, he thanked the attendees and all the people who followed the switching on of the Christmas lights in Vigo through the live broadcast.

Abel Caballero: "Vigo's lights are led, they consume less than a football pitch for a whole month"

Caballero has praised the work that the people of Vigo do every day, who all together "draw a path of economy" from sectors such as the automotive industry, fishing or research.

"We are a city that wants to live and that lives in the world. And it's all due to the people from Vigo and the women from Vigo. That's why I love you, I love you and I love you", he claimed in his speech prior to the lighting.

The mayor has joked that after the lighting of Vigo, "the whole planet" will be able to start Christmas, even cities like New York

.

In addition, he has also assured that the rain gave a truce because he himself decreed it.

Abel Caballero had a few words of remembrance for all those victims of the pandemic who this year could no longer be on such an important day for the city.

From there, he began to count down, going from 10 to 0 in three different languages: English, Spanish and Galician.

When he pushed the golden button, all the lights in the city lit up, to applause from the audience.

In addition, confetti and artificial snow began to fly in a party that will last until mid-January.

With more than 11 million LED lights and 400 decorated streets, this year Vigo has a multitude of lighting elements such as the giant tree, located in Porta do Sol and the great gift of Gran Vía, as well as a giant snowman and a Christmas ball.

Likewise, it adds new decorations such as

a castle or a shooting star of lights, which are added to the Ferris wheel of more than 60 meters high

from which you can enjoy the best views of the illuminated city.

Among other novelties, this year the iconic Vigo Christmas tree will have two new songs that will play to the rhythm of its lights.

In addition to the four songs from last year ('Happy Christmas', by John Lennon; the soundtrack of Pirates of the Caribbean and The Last of the Mohicans, and 'All I want for Christmas is you', by Mariah Carey), they will also be present 'English man in New York', by Sting and Waltz number 2, by Shostakovich.

All this Christmas spectacle will allow the city an economic return of about 750 million euros, despite the fact that the investment is around one million, according to Abel Caballero himself.

Precisely,

the hotel sector of the city has highlighted the importance of the Christmas season

for the industry.

Precisely this Saturday, the establishments of the olívica city have hung the "full" sign, with 100% occupancy, as indicated by the president of the Vigo Hotel Association (Ahosvi), Jaime Pereira, to Europa Press.

The same situation is experienced in various accommodations in the city for the December holidays and the weekends before Christmas, although "there is still room" in Vigo for some more tourist who has not made a reservation, Pereira joked.
