Former member of the National Assembly Son Hye-won, who was handed over to trial on suspicion of so-called 'Mokpo speculation', was confirmed by the Supreme Court with a fine of 10 million won.

The first division of the Supreme Court (Presiding Judge Noh Tae-ak) today (17th) confirmed the lower court judgment that sentenced former lawmaker Sohn to be innocent of the violation of the Anti-Corruption Act and sentenced him to a fine of 10 million won only for violating the Real Estate Real Name Act.

In May 2017, Congressman Sohn identified Mokpo City's 'Urban Regeneration Business Plan' in advance, and by January 2019, 26 plots of land, 21 buildings, etc. He was indicted in June 2019 for purchasing real estate worth 1.4 billion won.

Prosecutors applied the violation of the Anti-Corruption Act to the part where Sohn used facts she learned in the course of her business to purchase real estate, and the real estate real name law to the part where she purchased real estate under a borrowed name.

The first trial admitted to both charges and sentenced her to 1 year and 6 months in prison.

While acknowledging the secrecy of the urban regeneration business plan identified by former Congressman Sohn, the second trial court acquitted him of violating the Anti-Corruption Act, saying that it was insufficient to admit that former Congressman Sohn used the information in the process of acquiring real estate under a borrowed name.
