It was belatedly known that a victim suffering from a stalking crime committed suicide.

The Western District of the Daegu District Prosecutors' Office announced on the 29th that it had prosecuted the perpetrator without detention after a victim who was accused of stalking by a former lover in February made an extreme choice.

At that time, the police sent the suspect without detention, and the prosecution collected the sentencing data and applied for an arrest warrant directly, but the court rejected it.

It was because there was no fear of the suspect escaping and destroying evidence.

An official from the prosecution said, "We cannot disclose the details because the victim can be identified."

The Western Office also announced that it has taken measures to ensure that there is no gap in the protection of victims, such as extending the period of provisional measures by inspecting all cases of violation of the Stalking Punishment Act, where the provisional measures are terminated.

"We plan to actively respond to violent crimes such as stalking and sex crimes," said an official from the Western Branch.

: Women and Children Crime Investigation Department promotes plans to expand from 11 locations to 22 locations nationwide

Prosecutors are pushing for a plan to double the number of women and children crime investigation departments by the end of this year, which is dedicated to investigating crimes such as sexual violence, stalking, and child abuse.

This is to strengthen our ability to respond to a series of violent crimes targeting women and children, such as the recent Shindang Station staff stalking murder case, the sexual assault death case at Inha University, and the 'Second Room n' case.

According to the legal community on the 29th, the Supreme Prosecutor's Office recently proposed to the Ministry of Justice a reorganization plan to increase the number of women and children crime investigation departments from 11 nationwide to 22 within the year.

Currently, there are 5 prosecutors' offices in Seoul (Central, East, South, North, West) and 11 districts including Incheon, Suwon, Busan, Daegu, Gwangju, and Daejeon District Prosecutors' Offices with the Crimes Investigation Department for Women and Children.

Meanwhile, crimes against women and children are increasing year by year.

According to the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, over the past five years, the number of child abuse cases increased from 5,456 cases in 2017 (based on receipts) to 16,988 cases in 2021, and the number of domestic violence cases increased from 47,36 cases to 52,436 cases.

Since 2017 (4918 cases), about 40,000 cases of sexual violence have been received every year.

A total of 4,503 cases of stalking were received from the enactment of the Stalking Punishment Act in October last year to July this year.

An official from the prosecution said, "There are limits to what the prosecution can do in a situation where sex crimes, sexual exploitation crimes, and stalking crimes have become social issues, but let's do our best within the law and system."

In order to reorganize the organization, it is necessary to revise the Presidential Decree, 'Regulations on the Office of the Prosecutor's Office'.
